Abraham Levy, OBE (Hebrew: הרב רבי אברהם די יצחק הלוי, romanized: Harab Ribbi Abraham de Yitzhak HaLevy); (16 July 1939 – 24 December 2022) was an English Orthodox rabbi, theologian, and author. Levy served as spiritual head of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation for the Commonwealth from 1962 to 2012. In 1995, Levy was appointed Senior Rabbi of the Sephardi and Portuguese Community in the UK. He was a founding member of Naima Jewish Preparatory School and was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his work on interfaith relations in 2004.

Biography

Abraham Levy was born was born on 16 July 1939 in Gibraltar. His uncle was Sir Joshua Hassan, last Chief Minister of Gibraltar. He was the brother of former Mayor of Gibraltar Momy Levy and James Levy.

He moved to the UK in 1951 to study at Carmel College. He was ordained and received his Semicha from the Jews’ College. He served as spiritual head of the Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ congregation for the Commonwealth from 1962 to 2012. Levy was the rabbi of the Bevis Marks Synagogue and Lauderdale Road in London. In 1995, he was appointed Senior Rabbi of the Sephardi and Portuguese Community in the UK. He gained his semicha from Jews’ College and his PhD from the University of London. Honorary Deputy President of London School of Jewish Studies. He was the founder and Honorary Principal of Naima Jewish Primary School and an ecclesiastical authority for the Board of Deputies of British Jews.

He retired from his position as Spiritual Head in 2012.

Levy died December 24, 2022 in London. He had a son.

In 1993 Levy was awarded Knight Commander (Encomienda) Order of Civil Merit (Spain) and in 2004, an OBE for services to inter-faith co-operation.

In 2004, Levy was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to interfaith co-operation.
